The world of mobile phones

Everyone knows that you get stung for extra charges on your mobile phone when making phone calls from overseas. But is there a simple way of avoiding the extra fees that global roaming attracts?

While there’s not one all-encompassing method to avoid extra fees and charges on your pre-paid or contract mobile phone, there are a few tricks that frequent travellers adopt to save money. Firstly, cut down your mobile phone usage. That is of course the simplest way, but it’s also blatantly “duh” obvious. But the wisdom behind this advice would serve you well to remember time after time. Send text messages, don’t call everyone you know to tell them you’re on top of the Eiffel Tower, and don’t call your ex for a heart-wrenching conversation when you’ve had too many vodkas in a bar in Moscow. See what I mean about wise? That last one is also sound advice for any time you find yourself a “little” tipsy after a few drinks!

Another option for travellers who repeatedly visit a certain country or plan on staying an extended period of time is to acquire a SIM card for the new country. This doesn’t mean that you need to buy a range of Nokia phones and Motorola phones to have a different handset for each country you decide to visit, it’s simple enough to just swap the SIM cards over in the one phone. This way, it’s a cinch to take advantage of the whole world of deals on mobile phones, and ultimately save money in the process.

It’s understandable, when you’re overseas you don’t want to just have to rely on postcards or spend all your time on holidays in internet cafes. But just be savvy with your phone usage and you can get the most out of your trip!
